"At first look, it appears Inez Nickmans' furniture is notable for its colorfully painted finishes, bold geometric shapes and functional simplicity. But Nickmans, a St. Augustine, Fla., artist..., is more than a decorative painter -- she's a trained artist who has turned her energy to not only creating unique paint finishes, but also designing and building the underlying furniture."  from Coastal Antiques and Art, Savannah, GA. by Tim A. "Inez Nickmans compares her furniture construction to stretching a good canvas. She builds with solid wood utilizing primitive techniques. 'I am highly selective of the wood I use. I search for pieces with knots in them, pieces with character' claims the artist. Once built, the furniture is treated much like a blank canvas. The artist applies numerous layers of paint using an intuitive painting style and application of color. Nickmans paints and sands repeatedly, allowing each layer to reveal glimpses of the color beneath."

'Layers upon layers of acrylic paints are sanded between coats to create a sense of age distress, but the technique also renders a rich depth of color typically identified with more painterly works. Surprises abound -- from handcrafted closures made of bent nails and tin cans to stunning interior finishes.
But don't think Nickmans covers every inch of a piece with paint. Sanding or filing to expose the beauty of the underlying wood -- whether it's new material or a piece of recycled material... is an important part of her process.
"I like to bring out the natural wood, as well bring out the wood structure," Nickmans says. "I like to go to mills and get special woods or roughly milled wood to have the milling show. I work with structure and bring out interesting knots and characteristics of the wood." Nickmans has dedicated more than eight years to building furniture...'
